Notes
Mash:
Forgot to pre-heat mash-tun before starting mash. 3 gallon and 5 gallon pots used for heating strike water on kitchen stove. Each steps water volumes were measured when filling pots. Pot used was emptied for each step leaving no extra water for mash temperature adjustment. 0.5 tsp of baking soda added to water used in protein rest as a water adjustment to make filtered tap water better suited for brewing dark beer.
Protein Rest: start 125 F, end 123 F, 30 minutes, overshot water temp target and used 136.0 F water
Saccharification: start 146, end 144, 30 minutes; missed target temp, next time add more hot water
Mash Out: start 156 , end na, 10 minutes
Sparge:
After batch drained into brewpot, sparge water added to mash-tun and allowed to rest for 10 minutes. Batch volume came up short by 0.5 gallon after sparge water drained into brewpot
Boil:
Start Volume = 6.75 gallon
End Volume = 4.9 gallon into fermenter
Bottling:
3.4 oz of corn sugar boiled in 2 cups filtered tap water used for priming the 4.675 gallons transferred to the bottling bucket..
18 bottles filled before espresso added to bottling bucket. 7.2 oz of espresso added to the 3 gallons remaining in the bottling bucket. Espresso = Starbuck's Pike's Place ground coffee used in Bialetti stovetop espresso maker.
Can't Give a Side-by-Side Review But...
by TLong73By the time the batch was ready for tasting, the Kona Pipeline Porter was no longer locally available for a comparison. However, I am extremely happy with the way this turned out. Can't say it is a clone, but it is definetley a tasty coffee porter, or robust porter without the espresso add.
