Taste Notes
Average score: 34.75
Midwinter Homebrew Fest Score: 36
Comments were good across the board, it’s hard to figure out what they might have marked me down on. Off the top of my head, actually mashing high for 45min might help add more body and improve the score.
Scot Schaar:
AROMA AND FLAVOR NOTES: Toasty malts with toffee and caramel notes. Very low herbal hop character.
MOUTHFEEL NOTES: Very light body. Moderate carbonation.
BALANCE, DRINKABILITY, FINISH, AND AFTERTASTE NOTES: Low hop bitterness but enough roast for
balance. Goes down easy.
Nice flavor for a below 3% abv beer. Nice job.
Yuyu Kim:
AROMA AND FLAVOR NOTES: Slightly toffee and sugary, vanilla-like
Light toffee and maltiness but also touch of floral and earthiness.
APPEARANCE NOTES: Slightly reddish cooper colored, poor head foam and carbonation
MOUTHFEEL NOTES: Medium low bodied, carbonation is slightly less, creamy
BALANCE, DRINKABILITY, FINISH, AND AFTERTASTE NOTES: Good drinkability as Scottish light, Sweetness
and bitterness are balanced when aftertaste.
There was any slick or cloying for sweetness, no flaws, relatively good clean fermentation profile. Easy drinking as
the “Light” beer
KC Beir Meisters: 36
Notes from judges were slightly watery and low body, low sweetness and low carbonation. Considering adding flaked oats to next malt bill and high mashs temp
Cascade Cup: 35
One was indecernable and the other described it as a ‘very light scottish light’. Adding more to the idea that it needs to be ‘bigger’
Spring Fling: 32
Third Place
We are perhaps reaching the end of this beer’s shelf life as one judge noted that the flavors were ‘muted and starting to fall apart’.Notes
In decoction, remove twice the amount and boil down to reach mash out temp.
Went by Beer Smith recomended temp for mash. Was under 2 even after going in a couple of degrees hot. Going to see if I can’t adjust.
Mash started at 154.
1 Gallon boiling water raised it to 160
Stirred to 158.
152 by the end of mash
Ended up mashing for an hour because I failed to factor in boil-off time for special decoction.
Hops were off, did .6 instead of .37 because I can’t read directions. Scooped some out. This Recipe Has Not Been Rated
