Taste Notes

Version 1 was pretty close, but a wee bit too bitter. Version 2 has had some minor tweaks and I feel its now close enough to call it effectively cloned. I’ve conducted 7 triangle tests so far (using growler fills rather than cans), with 4 correct tests and 3 incorrect. Appearance wise, my version is a little bit hazier than the actual beer, but I’m happy that its within the variation that you can expect from this style of beer. When compared to the canned version, there is a fairly obvious distinction, mainly a reduction in hop aroma and a bit of sweetness in the can, possibly a bit of age/oxidation. (The cans were a few months old at the time of testing)

Notes

Version 1 Tasting the canned version, get lots of apricot and some mango and passionfruit. Its got a fruity sweetness but relatively light body. Bitterness is pretty minimal. Hops appear to be Galaxy, Vic Secret and Amarillo. Colour wise, my best guess would be 8 EBC based on my current tap beers. Website states OG 1.060, and 6% ABV. Means the FG must be 1.015 ish. Measurement of canned Biggie - FG 1.014. Website states 40 IBU, seems on the high side based on my tastes for my system. Might target 30 first time around. Ca 70, Mg 1, Na 20, Cl 100, SO4 50. ======================================== Version 2 Based on the first version, IBU dropped by 5 from 30 to 25. Grain bill unchanged. Late VS dropped and replaced with more amarillo to attempt to reduce a wee bit of grassiness. Also dropped the VS from the whirlpool. Ca 70, Mg 1, Na 25, Cl 110, SO4 40. 13/03/20 Brewday Mash pH 5.3 Chilled to 17° Set initially to 19° Oxygenated for 4 mins OG 1.061 14/03/20 (day 1) Krausen by 12 hours. 15/03/20 (day 2) Added first dry hops.
