Taste Notes

This version finally nailed the colour - the beer looks like a glass of blood.

Notes

This is an exciting idea - a beer brewed to reference murder! The colour is designed to look like blood, and the almonds are there to taste like cyanide. Make the beetroot juice by adding a cup of sterilized water the a blender and then adding a small to medium diced beetroot. Puree and strain and then add the liquid to the secondary. Do not add to the boil as heat gradually breaks down the pigments, resulting in less colour. Adding to primary will stain your yeast - not a good idea if you reuse. The red of a beetroot is not the right colour by itself, having a pink or purple tinge to it, but when mixed in the right proportion with a copper-coloured ale it comes out perfectly red. You'll know if you've added too much because the red will start to look artificial and the beer will develop a pink head. Straining off the plant matter and using only the bare minimum of beetroot necessary will avoid any vegetable tastes in the final beer.
